The dirty picture

The surveyors of ‘Swachh Survekshan 2018’ must be one bunch of optimists. After all, they chose to look the halffilled glass when over seven million other folks can not take their eyes off the half-empty bit. The city has been ranked the cleanest in Gujarat and 12th cleanest in the entire country this year, and we're still questioning how! That it has bettered its rating from the previous year is secondary—even there we wondered which part of the town were given cleaner this year.

What precisely were given the town the ‘cleanest’ tag, in spite of its ubiquitous tons of garbage, stench of waste overflowing from boxes onto the roads? To answer the question, Mirror took a quick tour of the town. Unfortunately, at no place did the tag seem justified, now not even on the so-called posh spaces of the town.

Be it Ramdevnagar, Shivranjani crossroads, University bus stand, the stretches between Hotel Courtyard Marriot and Anandnagar, Prernatirth and Jodhpur, Vyaswadi and Ranip Vadaj or even Nava Vadaj, the story stays the similar. At many puts, the garbage is dumped outdoor a container even though it is empty.

When contacted, Amul Bhatt, chairman of the status committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, stated, “We won't tolerate lapses in issues of cleanliness. I will get in touch with the involved officers. We shall take a look at the spaces that you've discussed.

We shall also take a look at if there is dirt in spaces other than those you've gotten discussed.” Vishal Khanama, assistant commissioner, new west zone, claimed that every one puts were cleaned continuously.

“However, we will take a look at once more and get the puts cleaned,” he stated, when requested concerning the dirty spaces. Naresh Rajput, assistant commissioner, west zone, too stored his response brief. “I shall get the spaces checked and take appropriate action,” he stated.

AMC spends, but…

The AMC earmarks Rs 125 crore for cleanliness each year. Of the 2017-18 finances, roughly Rs 60 crore used to be spent on door-to-door garbage assortment, Rs four crore on lifting garbage from bins and Rs three crore for taking it to the dumpsite. Rs 10 crore has been spent on acquire of dustbins and bins. Besides this, Rs 50 crore used to be spent on desilting of liquid waste.

Despite such huge spending, there is not any relief within the dirt on roads. AMC had come up with GPS tracking device for garbage pickup vans to make certain that contractors dutifully perform the task of gathering garbage from the pick-up level. This initiative helped the town earn the tag of smartest city in Gujarat, but little past that. For instance, the GPS tracker displays if a van has been to the garbage pick-up level, but now not if all of the waste has been picked up.

Lashing out on the AMC officers for failing to verify cleanliness within the city in spite of the sort of huge finances, Dinesh Sharma, opposition leader in AMC, stated, “They have managed to get the primary rank in cleanliness in Gujarat. But, that doesn't replicate within the ground state of affairs. There is dirt all over. Work is much less and corruption is more among AMC officers. Hence, there is not any quality work delivered.”

Even residents have scoffed on the best rating awarded to the town. “If Ahmedabad has been ranked the cleanest within the state, the entire survey is fake. Had the surveyors long past out on the streets, they would have found it to be one of the crucial unclean cities within the country. The AMC spends money but does now not monitor the cleanliness work. Lack of supervision has left the town to the mercy of contractors,” stated Ritesha Patel, resident of Ranip.

Tractors that lift garbage give Jodhpur a pass over. When they do come, they empty the bins, leaving at the back of the waste that lies outdoor those bins.

One take a look at AMTS and RTS bus stands will wash out the faux claims of cleanliness. It seems like those stands have now not been cleaned in ages. At all instances, there is garbage mendacity around.
