World C'ships: Srikanth survives scare to reach pre-quarters

NEW DELHI: Ace India shuttler and fifth seed Kidambi Srikanth defeated Pablo Abian of Spain in three tight video games to go into pre-quarterfinals of the 2018 BWF World Badminton Championships in Nanjing, China on Wednesday.

World No. 6 Indian overcame the problem from 48th ranked Spaniard 21-15, 12-21, 21-14 in the second round contest, which lasted 62 mins.

Srikanth, quarter-finalist in the remaining edition, began slowly but went into the primary wreck of the fit at 11-Nine. After that Srikanth didn't look back and sealed the primary game 21-15 in simply 18 mins.


Similar to the primary game, Abian began aggressively in the second game and this time took a four-point lead, 11-7, on the mid-game wreck. Uncharacteristically, Srikanth went flat in the heart game and misplaced it 12-21 in 19 mins as Abian pressured the fit into the decider.


The deciding 3rd game began on even keel and the 2 have been locked at 6-6 prior to the Spaniard gained consecutive issues to make it 10-7 in his favour. Srikanth then gained two tight challenges prior to going into the overall wreck at Nine-11. Srikanth took the lead for the primary time in the decider at 13-12, and wrapped up the all important final game 21-14.


Srikanth will face Malaysia's Liew Daren in the next round, after the Malaysian defeated Misha Zilberman of Israel 21-16, 21-16 in second round.
