KOLKATA: Is Team India getting able for lifestyles with out Mahendra Singh Dhoni?
The former India skipper was once omitted of India's Twenty20 squad for the three-match series towards the West Indies and the next series in Australia.
Although common skipper Virat Kohli, who also opted out of this series, has stated that Dhoni remains an integral a part of the group, Rohit Sharma, who will lead India in this series, felt that the Ranchi stalwart's absence gives the group control a chance to test young Rishabh Pant and seasoned campaigner Dinesh Karthik for the wicketkeeper's slot. "Obviously, Dhoni's experience will be missed but it gives an opportunity to other guys to express themselves," Rohit stated on the eve of Sunday's opening sport of the three-match T20I series towards West Indies on the Eden Gardens.
With the 2019 World Cup drawing closer, Rohit stated: "We cannot go to the World Cup with limited resources. We need to have options. This gives us a chance to try and test all these guys. Dhoni has been a massive player for us over the years. Rishabh (Pant) and Dinesh (Karthik) have a great opportunity to show (the selectors) what they are capable."
The Indian selectors have also named 3 uncapped players - Krunal Pandya, Shahbaz Nadeem and Khaleel Ahmed - in the squad for this series in addition to the next T20I series in Australia. "It's important to look beyond the 15-odd players who make the squad keeping in mind the World Cup. Therefore, those who have been doing well consistently, need to be given a chance," Rohit stated. "We have to look at the guys who are knocking on the door and see what they bring to the table," he added.
Describing himself as a 'stand-in' skipper, Rohit gave due respect to the opponents. "The West Indies are one of the strongest teams in the world T20 cricket. They have played a lot of T20 cricket and have their own league like our IPL. They have more experience and it is the format they enjoy the most. So they will be a strong opposition without a doubt," the India opener stated.
