Despite carjacking cases, no PCRs on roads

Chances of having police lend a hand on Tricity roads at evening are negligible. A team of The Times of India discovered this unhappy truth while carrying out a truth test.

After a spurt in instances of carjacking in Mohali and Panchkula, the TOI team lined virtually all of the Tricity roads over a week at other evening hours and witnessed near-absence of PCR cars. All roads and inside markets have been with none police presence in all of the Tricity.

In Chandigarh, the police department has sanctioned 60 PCR cars, which are supposed to be out on the roads and within the markets at evening. But the TOI team discovered handiest six PCRs - three each and every in two days.

There used to be no patrolling even in areas regarded as delicate. There used to be no PCR within the southern sectors, together with the busy Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT), at Sukhna Lake and along the Madhya Marg.

Similarly in Mohali, which has seen two carjackings in as many days, there have been no law enforcement officials on any of the roads or markets. Twenty-seven PCRs are supposed to be patrolling in Mohali, however the TOI team noticed just two in two days.

In Panchkula also, there used to be no police presence on roads or markets. Out of the 25 PCR cars, the TOI team discovered just two in two days. There used to be no PCR even at delicate spots like Majri Chowk, Old Panchkula light-point and Amartex Chowk, where a gunpoint carjacking had taken position on November 8.

There have been no law enforcement officials even on Saketri Road, a recognized break out route for criminals from Chandigarh to Panchkula.
