Hundreds riot over sackings at Noida Chinese phone unit

NOIDA: Hundreds of employees of a Chinese smartphone manufacturing facility here resorted to violence on Thursday after round 200 of them have been "sacked without notice", officials said.


Around 1,200 staff of the Hipad Technology India, which makes Xiaomi and Oppo phones, went on a rampage pelting stones at the development and barging into the facility in Sector 63, they said.

However, the corporate had no respectable reaction.

Police pressure was deployed at the website online at the same time as senior officials, together with Superintendent of Police, Noida City, Sudha Singh, reached there to assess the situation.

Singh said police have been alerted concerning the violence breaking out at the manufacturing unit, below Phase 3 police station limits, round 10am and immediately reached the spot.

"We got to know that several employees had resorted to violence after they were 'sacked' by their office without any notice," she said.

Singh said no formal grievance had been lodged by way of the corporate till the afternoon, at the same time as police have been probing the information.

The Labour Department officials who reached the unit within the afternoon said it looked to be a case of "miscommunication" on the corporate's part.

"Due to scarcity of uncooked subject matter, the corporate had requested the vendors to tell these other people not to come for work from Monday. But they persevered to come back to workplace and the management as of late barred them from punching in (biometric access).

"The vendor had possibly not informed the employees for this reason they kept coming to work which it appears ended in this false impression. The workplace requested them to depart the premises and the employees said they were not informed concerning the choice and have been being sacked for this reason they resorted to violence," Assistant Labour Commissioner Harish Chandra Singh told PTI.

The vendors were not to be had at the website online for rationalization on the factor, Singh added.

He said the corporate claimed that it has engaged a neighbouring company where it sought after to train these employees, but because of power-related problems that could not occur immediately.


"The corporate said they did indirectly inform the employees concerning the coaching programme but told this to the seller," Singh said.


Meanwhile, a non-public security guard at the unit described that the morning shift staff had arrived at eight am for work and inside two hours the rampage had begun.


"They went within and usually by way of eight.30am they all set to work on the assembly line. But more than 1000 staff had collected outside the principle development round 9.45am and chaos ensued," the guard said.


He additionally claimed that when the violence a number of employees fled the development with a number of cell phones and other units from the development.
