PM to greet India's first container vessel on inland waterways in Varanasi

NEW DELHI: In a primary for the rustic's inland water delivery, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 12 will obtain a container vessel in Varanasi on the river Ganga, Union Minister NItin Gadkari stated Sunday.

In the maiden container since Independence on inland vessel MV RN Tagore, meals and drinks primary PepsiCo is moving its 16 bins from Kolkata to Varanasi. The cargo bins will succeed in Varanasi on November 12.

"Inland waterways transport in India is set for a revolution and the massive work done on waterways has started showing impact," Union transport and Ganga rejuvenation minister Gadkari told PTI.

He stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will obtain the container vessel travelled for the primary time on inland waterways - NW 1 on the Ganga at Varanasi on November 12 at the newly advanced multi-modal terminal and shall devote the terminal to the country.

Gadkari stated this is the rustic's first container movement on inland vessel post-Independence, and a milestone second within the history of India's inland waterways delivery sector.

PepsiCo (India) has moved 16 containers- identical to 16 truckloads- filled with meals and snacks within the vessel MV RN Tagore which can make its return adventure with fertilisers belonging to IFFCO that will be procured from its Phulpur plant close to Allahabad.

Shipping Secretary Gopal Krishna along side IWAI chairman Pravir Pandey had flagged off the vessel wearing the consignment within the presence of PepsiCo representatives.

The event of flagging off the vessel ultimate week had coincided with every other momentous day for the IWT in India as IWAI's first foray into public non-public partnership (PPP) model become a reality with the handing over of operation and control of its terminals in Kolkata to Summit Alliance Port East Gateway (India) Pvt Ltd (SAPEL) on a provide, perform and maintain (SOM) model.

The govt earlier has stated container cargo delivery comes with several inherent benefits and added that it reduces the dealing with price, permits more uncomplicated modal shift, reduces pilferage and damage, it also allows cargo homeowners to reduce their carbon footprints.

The govt is growing NW-1 (river Ganga) underneath JMVP from Haldia to Varanasi (1,390 km) with the technical and fiscal help of the World Bank at an estimated price of Rs 5,369 crore. The project would permit industrial navigation of vessels with capability of one,500-2,000 DWT.


Gadkari had flagged off a consignment of Maruti vehicles from Varanasi to Haldia in August 2016.
