10k govt quarters to make way for towers

MUMBAI: The Centre has determined to redevelop central govt quarters at Antop Hill. The quarters, touted as Asia's biggest govt colony, are situated between King's Circle and Guru Tegh Bahadur stations on Harbour line. Buildings in these quarters were previous discovered to be previous and dilapidated and many have been declared as bad for habitation.

Officials in Delhi said the discussions are at an excessively preliminary degree. "The memorandum of understanding is yet to be signed. Also, the government will have to decide whether it will finance the project or allow it to be self-financed through a sale component," said the officers.

If the previous is any indication, the soon-to-start redevelopment of the central excise quarters at Wadala, also being done via NBCC, is in response to the self-finance type. The similar type is being adopted for redevelopment of Kidwai Nagar quarters in Delhi, said officers.

Central govt quarters at Wadala and Ghatkopar have been declared bad too. Officials at DoE, Mumbai, said residents of six buildings in Ghatkopar have been asked to vacate. "There are around 10,000 central government quarters in the general pool across Mumbai, many of which are dilapidated. We shall get several more quarters through redevelopment. There is high demand as most officials cannot afford rents close to their workplace," said officers at DoE, Mumbai, which handles allotment of residences in the city.

These might be changed with towers. "Since there are large open spaces at Antop Hill, it is proposed to first build on these open spaces, shift some of the residents here, and then pull down the old structures and rebuild," said officers.

The deficient condition of residences at Antop Hill can be gauged from the instances lodged at the on-line complaints board of the Central public works division (CPWD) liable for the maintenance of these buildings. In November, Subhash Godse, resident of creating 38, Sector VII, complained that despite primary upkeep, plaster in his flat continues to return off. He said repeated complaints have no longer drawn response from CPWD. Others have made equivalent complaints.
