CEC calls meet on railway line through MTR

NAGPUR: The Supreme Court’s Central Empowered Committee (CEC) has known as a meeting on January 16, 2019 in Delhi issuing notices to all 13 respondents within the upgradation of railway line via Melghat Tiger Reserve (MTR) in Amravati district.

The CEC has won two applications towards the project from Akot-based environment attorney Manish Jeswani and Prasad Khale of Conservation Action Trust (CAT), Mumbai.


The CEC member-secretary Amarnatha Shetty has requested all respondents together with state’s leader secretary, WII’s director, NTCA member-secretary, leader wildlife warden, South Central Railway (SCR), Melghat box director and others to remain provide with all related documents.


Both Jeswani and CAT’s Khale has sought particular instructions from the CEC to save already bisected MTR due to state freeway 204, from further getting divided due to gauge conversion between Akola-Khandwa. The railway officers are in procedure to soak up gauge conversion work between Akola-Khandwa (176km) on prone Akot-Amlakhurd railway stations. Of this, 39km existing alignment passes through the tiger reserve.


The project calls for diversion of 160.94ha forest land which is underneath proper of method (ROW) of railway in Wan sanctuary for non-forestry works. As per the SCR, the work involves reconstruction of many bridges, tunnels, widening of current herbal underpasses and advent of recent underpasses and fencing within the core space of MTR, which has also been declared as a Critical Tiger Habitat (CTH) in 2007. The BG proposal is under consideration since 2008. Surprisingly, regardless of detrimental record from the NTCA and towards regulations, the proposal used to be recommended topic to mitigation measures.


“However, none of the provisions of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 permit any of these forums to take resolution towards the passion of wildlife protection,” the petitioners have instructed.
