Shahid Kabir’s popular ghazal to be part of Hollywood film ‘Gandhi Murder’

Nagpur: Popular ghazal ‘Main na Hindu na Musalmaan, mujhe jeeno do’, penned through Shahid Kabir, who hailed from town, will now be heard in a Hollywood movie.
‘Gandhi Murder’, produced through Laxmi R Iyer and directed through Pankaj Saigal and Karim Taraidia, is slated for a January 30 release. “Pankaj Saigal heard the ghazal on YouTube and decided that he wanted to picturize it in the movie,” says Sameer Kabir, son of the past due shayar.

Elaborating on why the ghazal was selected through the makers, Sameer says, “The movie revolves around the risks which existed to the life of Mahatma Gandhi and his subsequent assassination. It additionally has scenes of partition and how it tore the social cloth of this country. This tune is picturized to underline the pain of the people on either side of the border and the losses they suffered.”

Initially, Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was to sing the tune however he reneged later, says Sameer. “A meeting was held in Dubai to talk about the tune with Khan. He confirmed a lot of interest too. But on his return to Pakistan, it kind of feels he was advised in opposition to it as the movie is in keeping with Bapu,” he says.

The producers then approached Rabbi Shergill, every other widespread Sufi singer, who agreed to sing it.


Widely stated as the founder of recent poetry in Vidarbha, Shahid Kabir infrequently wrote on religious or political problems. This ghazal was penned through him after the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992. “My father stayed clear of political and spiritual topics. But that was the time he was pained through the happenings and the lack of life of each Hindus and Muslim in the riots. Being a poet, he put down his feelings on this ghazal,” says Sameer.


This is the primary time that this ghazal will be used in a movie, though it turned into very popular when past due ghazal singer Jagjit Singh first lent his voice to the words for his album Mirage released in 1995.
