Textile industry demands 50% cut in power tariffs

Surat: The textile business leaders will probably be making a robust illustration to Gujarat’s power minister Saurabh Patel to provide 50% concession on the electricity tariff, which they claim will supply a level-playing field with the textile sector in Maharashtra.
Patel has been invited because the visitor of honour at the inauguration of the three-days Energy International exhibition organized for the primary time by way of the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) at the Surat International Exhibition and Convention Centre (SIECC) at Sarsana on Friday.

Industry resources stated that the delegation from SGCCI, energy loom weavers and textile processors have already represented the electricity tariff issue with leader minister Vijay Rupani in Gandhinagar this week.

Though the CM has confident all proactive measures to be taken within the textile policy-2018, the federal government would possibly not consider the 50% electricity tariff concession call for of the business.

President of South Gujarat Textile Processors Association (SGTPA), Jitu Vakharia, stated, “Not only the power loom weavers, however the textile generators too are dealing with cut-throat pageant from the generators in Maharashtra where government is giving huge subsidies to restore the closed generators. If this happens, trade will shift to Maharashtra.”

Vakharia added, “Many powerloom and embroidery units have shifted to Navapur and Tarapur in Maharashtra for electricity concessions and other subsidy advantages.”

According to business leaders, the power tariff in Maharashtra is Rs three.50 in step with unit, while the textile business in Surat will pay Rs 7.50 in step with unit fee. Due to affordable electricity, the production value of the units in Maharashtra is significantly much less. The material manufactured in Maharashtra is less expensive compared to Surat.

Representative of energy loom weaving sector, Ashish Gujarati, stated, “We will meet the minister on Friday and remind him about electricity concession scheme. If the federal government doesn’t concede, extra units will shift to Navapur and Tarapur.””
