MANGALURU/UDUPI: Hundreds of fishermen from 3 coastal districts — Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada joined huge protest that began in Malpe Port on Sunday to highlight factor of Tribhuja, fishing boat with seven fishermen on board which went missing off the Goa coast. They demanded the federal government to expedite search operation and hint the missing boat and individuals once conceivable.
The protest was called by various fishermen associations to pressurise the state and central governments to trace the missing fishermen.
The national freeway remained blocked for a while because of the protest march
It is estimated that as many 25,000 fishermen from all age groups joined the protest which was flagged off by G Shankar, at Malpe Port on Sunday. Fishermen from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada joined the massive protest. Due to protest, national freeway was blocked for a while causing inconvenience to common man.
Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje, auto-rickshaw, taxi house owners and native buyers too joined the protest.
On Saturday, Home Minister MB Patil visited Udupi to review the situation and held a gathering. He additionally attempted to convince fishermen group not to hang any protest on Sunday, alternatively, talks remained inconclusive.
