Water level at Bengaluru's Varthur Lake dips

BENGALURU: An underconstruction waste weir at Varthur Lake, close to Varthur village, breached Sunday morning, plummeting the water stage of the lake.

Stating it used to be now not the primary time that this had came about, lake warden Jagadish Reddy stated: “Due to the breach at the southeast part of the lake, the water stage has fallen by over 50%.”

In the latter half of 2017, the waste weir of the lake had breached a number of instances, with the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), the custodian of the lake, blaming the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in December. This time too, BDA engineers claimed the BBMP had closed the sluice gates, resulting in the breach.

Stressing that it used to be the coffer dam and now not the lake bund that used to be breached, the BDA engineer stated: “Since we are developing a waste weir at the southeast aspect of the lake, we've got built a temporary channel. The BBMP is developing a bridge downstream, so they've closed the sluice gates. This has ended in a increase of power, which resulted in breach of the coffer dam. We will lay extra sandbags close to the coffer dam to verify it doesn’t happen once more.”
