Congress tries to woo Marandi amid jitters in mahagathbandhan camp

RANCHI: Senior Congress leader Subodh Kant Sahay on Friday held a closed-door meeting with JVM-P leader Babulal Marandi, who has made public his sadness over the seat-sharing system worked out between Rahul Gandhi and JMM operating president Hemant Soren for the proposed ‘mahagathbandhan’ of opposition parties in Jharkhand. Marandi is unhappy over being presented simply two Lok Sabha seats and indicated that he may just even walk out of the alliance if his calls for don't seem to be met.

Soren had met Rahul at his place of abode in Delhi on Thursday and then Congress and JMM had announced that the “framework” of the ‘mahagathbandhan’ were ready. Though the choice of seats each parties would contest used to be now not disclosed formally, Congress sources mentioned out of 14 Lok Sabha seats, their party would contest seven, leaving 4 for JMM, two for JVM-P and one for Lalu Prasad’s RJD.

However, Marandi had expressed his displeasure at this system on Thursday. “Seats will have to be divided at the basis of the respective energy of the parties. We demand Koderma, Chatra and Giridih parliamentary seats.” he mentioned.

On Friday, he reportedly told Sahay that he would take a choice on whether to remain within the alliance after chatting with his party colleagues.

Disagreements can also be solved best thru dialogue. They (Congress leaders) called me ultimate night and this morning as smartly. Let’s see what happens,” Marandi told IdealNews after the meeting.

Sahay admitted that there are issues about one or two seats, “which will probably be resolved quickly.

Reports mentioned RJD, too, is not happy with the mahagathbandhan for now not being allocated Palamu. RJD state president Annapurna Devi mentioned, “We can't go away Palamu at any value as a result of we have a powerful base there.”


With no seat earmarked for them, Left parties, too, gave the impression to be making ready to head it by myself within the elections. CPI state general secretary, Bhuvaneshwar Prasad Mehta, told media persons in Hazaribag: “If the mahagathbandhan ignores us, we will go solo.” CPI reportedly wants Hazaribag the place it has a vital presence.


CPI-ML, which used to be also within the discussions, is rooting for the Koderma seat. “We will contest from Koderma at all value,” its Rajdhanwar MLA Rajkumar Yadav mentioned.


On January 19, Congress, JMM, JVM-P, RJD and Left parties had agreed to together fight against NDA on this 12 months’s Lok Sabha and assembly elections within the state.
