EC tests 74% EVMs, VVPATs for Guj

Even as the controversy over the efficacy of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) refuses to die down, the state Election Commission has announced that the first round of checking out of EVMs and Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in Gujarat is over. Third-generation EVMs and VVPATs shall be used for the elections and, as consistent with officials, to this point 74 consistent with cent of all of the units for use in Gujarat have been tested.

Over 50,000 new VVPAT and over 67,000 new EVM machines shall be offered this election. The machines have been developed by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). Chief Electoral Officer S Murli Krishna stated, “As part of the protocol and procedure we observe ahead of elections, checking out of about 74 consistent with cent is over.”

Features of next-gen units

According to resources, the supposedly tamper-proof machines may have new options like self-diagnosis of error, battery existence prediction show in share, digital certification of mutual machines and authentication. Unlike the previous lot of machines, they will also not have any issues of compatibility with different units.

Also if the paired instrument is changed, the gadget will not work and whole authentication shall be required again. Recently, former Chief Election Commissioner T S Krishnamurthy had opined that the EVMs are credible even with out VVPATs. He also stated the controversy on the efficacy of EVMs would not die down, as their critics would search for any other reason to criticise those machines.


The controversy

Many opposition events have puzzled authenticity of the EVM, tough return of poll packing containers. They have claimed that the machines can also be manipulated and also are prone to malfunction, allegations which were rubbished by the BJP. Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora dominated out the possibility of going back to the poll packing containers, saying that they were constantly seeking to upgrade EVMs to cause them to foolproof.

He had stated the EVMs were manufactured by “highly-secured” firms, which have been engaged in defence equipment production too, and supervised by a technical knowledgeable panel. He had added that the VVPAT, which have been effectively used in the contemporary state elections, would now be used across the nation in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Gujarat has 26 Lok Sabha seats. In the 2014 LS elections, there were greater than 3.63 crore registered voters, of which a total of 1,74,72,323 had voted.
