Free cup of chai in exchange of waste at the Ardh Kumbh

While there are several benefits of not littering in public places (escaping fines, retaining the environment clean, et al), at the ongoing Ardh Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, the guests have an incentive to ensure the already existing muddle and junk within the premises is recycled. The mela administration, in affiliation with a leading tea logo, has set up multiple kiosks across the mela premises which offer unfastened cups of tea in change for recyclable waste.

“The kiosks are fitted with sensors above the decrease part, which is a dustbin. As quickly as any individual drops some waste like a water bottle or tetra pack and even food wrappers, the sensor catches that and the machine pours tea in a cup, much like some other tea vending machine. The only distinction this is that as an alternative of money, the machine takes waste material as cost,” explains an professional from the Kumbh establishing committee. There are over a dozen of those kiosks within the mela, and several dozen more strewn across Prayagraj city in primary spaces like bus stands and the railway station. The waste gathered is picked up through town’s municipal body each night and brought to town’s dumping grounds for recycling. There isn't any set weight or amount of waste required for a cup of tea. One small plastic water bottle is sufficient to be registered through the sensor. Officials say the initiative is an effort to keep the mela clean and praise people for cleaning the realm, as a part of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
