IIT Ropar researcher invents Pen-sized Pocket Inverter

PATIALA: The researcher at IIT Ropar had invented a pocket inverter which is sort of equivalent to the dimensions of a pen. The researchers claimed that the inverter would price around Rs.5000 which is 4 times inexpensive than any commercially to be had inverter.

The compact length Inverter turns out to be useful for UPS, Electric vehicular and Renewable energy power conversion applications because of the emerging damaging results of pollutants and depletion of natural assets, era of electrical power using renewable energy sources and demand for pollution-free electrical car applied sciences which is the will of the hour.

Having dimensions of 14×five cm, the designed inverter is 4KVA inverter which is in a position to driving as much as 5HP box machines. The researchers claimed that if when compared, this pocket-size inverter can provide the ability 4 times greater than the home VPS inverters. The researchers stated that inverters getting used at homes can convert and supply power upto 1.1 KV while this new compact design is in a position to supplying power upto 4 KV.

It is designed for 2 layers PCB (Printed Circuit Board) the place the parts are accommodated two facets of the board. The design is compact by way of minimizing the usage of isolated power supplies to at least one and associated motive force circuit to 3 to change into a pocket-sized inverter.

"The batteries have to be attached in a similar way as it is used with other inverters. However, our newly designed pen-sized inverter is four times more powerful than the home inverters. One can carry this compact inverter, having current rating upto 10 Amperes, while travelling in vehicles and can get converted the power of batteries from DC to AC. Now a day's commercially available three inverters are bulky in size and complex in design for small and medium voltage applications due to the requirement of isolated power supplies for driving the inverter switches. In three-phase inverter it requires six switches for which six isolated power supply along with six different driver circuits are required to control the inverter output which is being fed to the load", stated, Dr. AV Ravi Teja, Assistant Professor at Electrical Engineering Department, IIT Ropar.

The research has been carried out by way of AV Ravi Teja, and his PhD Scholars Ashwani Kumar Rana and Muddasani Satyanarayana in the institute.

Professor Teja added, "Up to now we have tested our inverter in open loop design using FPGA (Field Programmable Gate array) controller and the results obtained are satisfactory. The cost of the Inverter is coming around Rs.5000 /- which is four times cheaper than any commercially available inverter in the market. Its useful for UPS, Electric vehicular and Renewable energy power conversion applications because of the rising harmful effects of pollution and depletion of natural resources, generation of electrical power using renewable energy sources and demand for pollution-free electric vehicle technologies. Most renewable energy systems are connected to the utility grid through a voltage source inverter. We are also getting our design of this inverter patent."
