Kumbh cops draw new plan for crowd management

ALLAHABAD: After analysing the easiest crowd density spots in the ongoing Kumbh Mela with the assistance of crowd analytics device during Mauni Amvasya Snan by which over 5 crore devotees took dip in the Sangam on Sunday, the Mela police has drafted a recent crowd management and safety plan for the remaining ‘shahi snan’ of Kumbh at the instance of Basant Panchami on February 10.

The Mela management would deploy additional forces and volunteers at 5 recognized spots — Sangam noze, Kali Sadak, Akhara Marg, Ganga Prasar Kshetra and Parade — for better crowd management during the ‘snan’, more likely to be attended via over two crore devotees.

Additional DG (Allahabad zone) S N Sabat said, “A group of 10 information era (IT) experts reviewed some densely populated areas in the ongoing Kumbh and located that the density of devotees and pilgrims was the easiest at Sangam noze — 3.19 individuals in line with sq. meter -- adopted via Kali Sadak, Peepe ka Pul, Akhara Marg, Ganga Prasar Kshetra and Parade.”

The experts took help of 452 high-definition cameras installed at the Integrated Control & Command Centre (ICCC) and crowd analytics device in arriving at the conclusion.

“After analyzing the info and figure, Mela police has chalked out a recent safety plan and additional forces, including two corporations of para-military forces and 10 Inspector-rank cops can be deployed at the 5 locations,” he said adding, “additional forces had been referred to as in from different zonal districts.”

The Mela police had deployed over 35,000 police and para-military personnel during the Mauni Amavasya snan. However, witnessing the inflow of devotees, an additional 2,000 personnel have also been summoned for foolproof safety and crowd management, he added.

Apart from deployment of extra forces, police would barricade different routes, including Yamuna Bridge highway and Jhunsi highway to maintain the waft of crowd during the Basant Panchami snan.

Sabat said the waft of devotees and pilgrims can be rather excessive until February 11.


He added that Mela police has also held a meeting with Akhara Parishad to make sure that akharas would practice the directions issued for them, like selection of vehicles and timing.


“It was unanimously made up our minds that all the 13 akharas can be taking out their shahi processions as in line with scheduled timings and would go back to their respective camps accordingly. As in line with the tradition, sanyasis would take snan first adopted via vairagis and Udasin akhara,” he added.


Mela management has also appealed to the akharas to restrict the selection of followers and devotees of to keep away from crowding.


President of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad Narenda Giri has stressed out that all the akharas can be following the gadget to keep away from any crowding.
