PANAJI: Multilingual writer, poet, dramatist, journalist and politician, 53-year-old Vishnu Surya Wagh breathed his final in South Africa on February 8, his spouse Aruna introduced on Wednesday. After suffering a stroke on May 15, 2016, the former St Andre MLA used to be bedridden and, in consequence, out of active public lifestyles.
As per the observation released by way of his spouse, Wagh “handed on peacefully in South Africa while he used to be on a excursion to Cape Town and Johannesburg as per his wish and need”. She later stated that they might go back with his frame in a day or two.
Recently, a video of his sons participating in a therapeutic session in South Africa had long past viral.
Wagh used to be the St Andre MLA for the time period 2012-2017 during which he had a stint as deputy speaker of Goa assembly.
Born on July 24, 1965, the multi-hyphenated personality entered politics within the 1990s. He first joined Shiv Sena after which moved to MGP, Congress, and most recently BJP, of which he used to be an MLA when he took unwell.
Having penned virtually 20 plays each in Konkani and Marathi, but even so scripts for a Marathi movie, Wagh used to be awarded the Goa Ratna amongst different honours.
He used to be one of the vocal advocates for the rights of the Bhandari Samaj group in Goa to which he belonged, and used to be most recently embroiled in a controversy for the explosive content of his ebook ‘Sudir Sukt’. His ‘Tuka Abhang Abhang’ had in a similar way forced the intelligentsia in Maharashtra to sit up and take understand.
Wagh used to be also a caricaturist and known for the fiery editorials he wrote during his lengthy stint in Marathi journalism.
Known for his oratory, he at all times went out of his method to make a case for the mother tongue as the perfect medium of instruction.
When he advanced differences over the problem with the BJP government, the later taking a divergent view on the topic, Wagh did not budge from his stand and continued to make a case for the mother tongue within the state legislative assembly.
He also headed many cultural organisations, most particularly Goa Kala Academy and the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG). As the vice-chairperson ESG, Wagh oversaw one version of the International Film Festival of India.
