SoBo-Alibaug Ro-Ro service to start in 3 months

MUMBAI: Come May, Mumbaikars short of to take their car to Alibaug received’t have to fret about using for three hours. A roll-on-roll-off ship—popularly referred to as RoRo—which will accommodate automobiles and private buses, could be launched between the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) and Mandwa/Dighi via April-end or early May.

The Ro-Ro will have area for 10 buses, 40 automobiles and 250 passengers and cut back the journey to an hour. “We are floating tenders in a day or two,” said MbPT chairman Sanjay Bhatia.

Sources said the charges would be finalised only through the tendering process, and are anticipated to be round Rs 300-400 for a car, Rs 700-800 for a bus and Rs 200-300 for an individual passenger.

The provider will likely be a boon to those travelling to Mandwa, Alibaug and seashores like Murud-Janjira, Velas, Shreewardhan which are close to the Dighi port.
