SURAT: In the remaining 5 years, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has constructed nearly 400 toilets for residents of Bhedwad Dargah and Pandesara, majority of them below the Swachh Bharat Mission. But these toilets are getting used for functions as opposed to answering nature's call. Reason: SMC is but to give a drainage connection for these toilets, thus rendering them needless.
Residents are left without a possibility but to continue with their routine of defecating in the open. Many have even converted these toilets into storerooms, bogs of fireplace puts to mild chullah for cooking. In many homes, residents have covered the squat toilets with tiles to make use of that more space.
"I set off at daybreak for an open field to answer nature's call. It is risky and shameful, but we don't have any other option," stated Beba Sejwadi, 37, who has been living in the area for the previous 20 years. Her members of the family also defecate in the open.
Incidentally, it was once on January 24 that the Union ministry for city development had upgraded Surat's open defecation free (ODF) status to ODF++ from ODF+. As in step with the definition by the ministry of consuming water and sanitation, ODF-plus is an area where but even so common availability and utilization of toilets, control of forged and liquid waste, cleanliness of water assets, maintenance of public and family toilets and awareness on personal hygiene are at their highest.
Many different women from the area stated regardless of a number of representations, the government have not stricken to do the rest. "Whenever we complain to ward office, the staffers promise us they will resolve the problem, but ultimately nothing happens. The civic authorities never forget to send us notices for tax dues, but tend to easily forget our difficulties," stated Sunita Vagh, 30.
The residents face significant issue when they have to take their kids to respond to the decision of nature. They make them take a seat anywhere outdoor their houses. A big hygiene issue surfaces in the area continuously with mosquito threat most effective making it worse because at some puts bathroom lines are related to open gutter. "I have to go one km daily to answer the call of nature despite having a toilet at home. The toilet can't be used because there is no drainage connection," stated Sanjay Godse, 40.
When contacted, D M Jariwala, zonal officer of Udhna zone, stated, "I am not aware about the issue, but I will inquire. There is no drainage network in some localities in Bhedwad."
Civic officials informed that at some locations, toilets had been hooked up with sewage pits but as soon as the tanks started to overflow it was once again to square one.
