3 key seats still a riddle for Cong & allies

PUNE: The Congress-NCP alliance is but to announce candidates for the Pune and Raver Lok Sabha constituencies, for which the filing of nominations will start from Thursday.

Similar is the placement in Sangli where the Congress is but to settle a seat-sharing discussion with the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghtana (SSS).

The BJP has already introduced candidates for the three seats. It has fielded Girish Bapat, a senior minister in the state cabinet, for Pune. In Sangli, BJP’s sitting MP Sanjay Patil is in the fray and the birthday party has given price ticket to Raksha Khadse, former revenue minister Eknath Khadse’s daughter-in-law, for Raver.

Pune and Sangli have been identified to be Congress strongholds for years. But the birthday party is now dealing with a challenge to find a sturdy candidate for each the seats. In the 2014 elections, the BJP had wrested the two seats from the Congress.

In Pune, the Congress is but to finalize the candidate to pitch in opposition to Bapat. Sources mentioned the Congress was still taking into consideration two choices — whether to go for a birthday party loyalist or make a selection an “outsider”. Though a large section of the Congress workers was in favour of a candidate from inside the birthday party, the resources mentioned the central management was taking alliance spouse NCP’s views prior to announcing the title.

In Sangli, bother is brewing inside the Congress following the proposal to depart the seat to the SSS. “The proposal has no longer long gone down neatly with the family members of former leader minister and Congress chief overdue Vasantdada Patil. The state of affairs turned into all the extra sophisticated a couple of days in the past along with his grandson, Pratik Patil, quitting the birthday party”.

Sensing the tussle inside the Congress over the seat, SSS leader Raju Shetti has now mentioned that his birthday party would no longer contest from Sangli.

In Raver, the Congress and the NCP have been still unsure about the candidate. As consistent with the seat sharing formula, the NCP was supposed to box its candidate from Raver. However, the birthday party was willing to change the seat for Ratnagiri with the Congress. But after the Congress introduced the candidate for Ratnagiri, the possibility of an change now looks far away. The Sharad Pawar-led birthday party had proposed to box former Congress MP Ulhas Patil on the NCP price ticket. But the be offering was became down.
