LAUSANNE: Gafur Rakhimov stepped down as head of the AIBA, global newbie boxing's governing body, on Friday amid a spat with the International Olympic Committee that would see the sport kicked out of the 2020 Tokyo Games.
The Uzbek businessman has been engulfed in controversy since he used to be elected in November as a result of the USA Treasury Department has related him to "transnational criminal organisations", a price he vehemently denies.
Rakhimov said that underneath his leadership "the work done this last year has revitalised and energised AIBA and boxing".
"However, despite these efforts, there have been many discussions these previous few months about the future of Olympic boxing. A lot of that used to be principally serious about politics and now not sport.
"While I had in point of fact was hoping and believed that sport and politics might be separated, and that the great work and sure changes being infused into AIBA could be recognised, the politically-based discussions have put into query the growth being made all the way through the AIBA organisation."
Boxing's inclusion within the Tokyo Olympics is dependent upon the outcome of an investigation into AIBA through the International Olympic Committee, which has introduced the body with an inventory of 41 questions by the use of audit company Deloitte, who will then report to the Olympic body.
Upon pronouncing the investigation the IOC suspended qualifying for the 2020 boxing match -- making it the one sport to not have its qualifiers approved -- and warned that it might be stripped of the right to run the competition.
Relations between the IOC and AIBA have been hit arduous at the 2016 Rio Olympics when 36 officials and referees have been suspended amid allegations of bout solving.
Rakhimov protested his innocence on Friday, announcing the allegations in opposition to him have been motivated through political battles in Uzbekistan.
"Once again, as I have said sooner than on a large number of events, I attest and make sure that the allegations in opposition to me have been fabricated and in line with politically motivated lies; I agree with that the truth will be successful," Rakhimov said in his resignation observation.
"Nevertheless, I have always said that I would never put myself above boxing, and as president, I have an obligation to do the whole lot in my power to serve our sport and our athletes.
"Therefore, given the current scenario, I have knowledgeable the AIBA committee of my intent to step apart as AIBA president.
"I'm convinced that all of the just right projects that have been implemented this ultimate 12 months will function a foundation that may continue to strengthen our sport at some point."
