UDHAGAMANDAM: A gaur (Indian bison) killed a tea estate worker at the Kundha wooded area range in the Nilgiris on Saturday.
The victim, 59-year-old S Raju, was a resident of Thuthurmattam village, police assets stated. “He was taking a stroll round 6.30am when a bison herd strayed into the estate. One of the animals attacked him. He died on the spot,” a police officer stated.
Forest division officials sent the body to the government headquarters sanatorium for autopsy and passed over Rs 50,000 as initial repayment to the victim’s family. “Rs three.50lakh will be disbursed to family after procedural formalities,” an respectable stated.
Due to a dry spell prevailing in the Nilgiris, elephants and gaurs are straying into human habitations on the lookout for meals and water.
