Kalighat death: 2nd arrest exposes 5-hr torture

KOLKATA: A night guard, Krishna Lal, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting Shankar Mondal, 25, at Kalighat remaining Sunday. The wondering of 2 of the arrested men — Kanai Patra, 55, and Lal, 48 — has thrown up details of the way Mondal was virtually tortured for over five hours earlier than he misplaced consciousness. He died the following day, leading his family to allege he was lynched.

Police said Mondal was time and again slapped and crushed up with rods and driven around in spaces like Satish Mukherjee Road, Masjidpara and Kalighat Park, all in the name of improving a mobile phone reportedly owned by way of Patra’s son Abhijit.


Sources said an area who had come to the police station to spot the accused played a key role in serving to law enforcement officials with Lal’s arrest. “We arrested Lal from SP Mukherjee Road,” said a police source.


According to investigators, on Friday night, 4 men had gone to Mondal’s place of abode and threatened his sister that he “can be killed if the cell was no longer returned.”


“Patra told us that he was slumbering when two of Abhijit’s buddies got here to his house and said Mondal were cornered. The father-son duo reached the spot and beat up Mondal. For the following three hours — between 3am and 6am — 4 to 5 men took Mondal to a number of native addresses as Patra claimed Mondal saved telling them he had deposited the stolen phone with different folks. Patra said it was around 6.15am that they got here close to the departmental store and he returned home,” said an officer.


Police said Mondal was tied to a tree, stripped and denied even water during the night. “We suspect Mondal was assaulted yet again between 6am and 10am when the men failed to recover the phone. Not once did they touch the police,” said the source.
