Snake, other reptiles seized from flier at airport

CHENNAI: Customs officers at Chennai world airport on Monday morning seized a horned pitviper, a toxic African snake and several other different endangered reptiles from the bag of a passenger who had arrived from Bangkok.

Apart from the viper, two Rhinoceros Iguana (Cyclura cornuta), 3 Rock Iguana (Cyclura Genus), 22 Egyptian Tortoise (Testudo kleinmani), 4 Blue Tongued Skink and 3 Green Tree Frogs (Genus hyla), an amphibian species were found inside plastic bins in the passenger's bags.


The passenger, a 22-year-old Chennai student named Mohammad Abdul Majeed had arrived from from Bangkok by way of Thai Airways flight No. TG337.


The Horned Pit Viper is an African venomous snake and there's no anti venom to be had in India for it. Egyptian Tortoise is a seriously endangered species and is endemic to Egypt and Libya.


The natural world species were seized beneath the provisions of Customs Act 1962. The passenger used to be detained. The seized natural world species will likely be despatched again to Bangkok.
