NEW DELHI: An afternoon after the Congress ruled out making Delhi's statehood as its ballot plank for the Lok Sabha election, the Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday asked its leader Sheila Dikshit what "are her latest compulsions" in the back of the U-turn at the factor.
Noting that Dikshit, a former chief minister, had promised full statehood for Delhi when she was once in power, senior AAP leader Gopal Rai said she had argued in 2013 that Delhi faced problems in coordination between different businesses and such problems would were resolved had Delhi been a full state.
"Was she lying back then or is she lying now?," Rai asked.
"Dikshit should tell the people of Delhi whether the 2015 manifesto was a lie or what are her latest compulsions in going back from what her party had been promising to the people of Delhi for decades?," the senior AAP leader said.
"It is shocking that somebody who has been a chief minister of Delhi is today saying that statehood for Delhi cannot be an issue for Lok Sabha elections. If one were to believe what Dikshit is saying today then on what basis she had got a resolution passed from the Assembly and sent it to the then central government for getting this demand fulfilled?," he said.
"Whom is Sheila Dikshit trying to fool when it is known to everyone that statehood for Delhi will be granted by the passage of a Constitution amendment bill in Parliament? If an issue to be decided in Parliament is not an issue for Lok Sabha elections then what will be the issue?," he added.
Dikshit had on Tuesday said the Congress would contest the April-May Lok Sabha polls on national problems and full statehood for Delhi was once now not in its checklist of problems to be taken up all the way through campaigning.
The ruling AAP in Delhi has been campaigning for Lok Sabha polls with full statehood for the city as its main factor for the elections.
Dikshit maintained full statehood was once now not conceivable and the problem would now not determine in the celebration's manifesto for Lok Sabha polls.
