Academicians call for reform in evaluation & examination system

Coimbatore: Academicians say it's excessive time that the examination and analysis patterns in upper training establishments are reformed.
Last year, a 10-member committee set up by means of the University Grants Commission (UGC) issued a collection of recommendations for analysis reforms in upper training establishments, in accordance with inputs from lecturers, students, controller of examinations and professionals.

However, establishments had been yet to wake up to the placement, academicians stated.

The committee had urged quite a lot of reforms in training development, question paper surroundings and grading device.

It had stated the establishments could focus on having inside steady analysis and external analysis within the ratio of 30:70 after which gradually transfer on to 50:50, whilst ‘exceptionally high-ranking’ establishments could even have it as 60:40 in order that the continuous analysis and assessment positive aspects significance.

About the grading device, the committee had urged that establishments transfer from absolute grading device, had been students are graded in accordance with set marks, to a relative grading device where they would be graded in relation with the efficiency in their classmates, as it might be ‘fairer to students’.

However, academicians say such suggestions had been yet to take the type of implementation in upper training establishments. Former vice-chancellor of Bharathiar University S Sivasubramanian stated lately upper training establishments had been best generating stage holders and now not intellectuals.


“Those who set question papers simply take questions from previous papers and frame one, rather than checking out students understanding and making them suppose,” he stated. There must be structural adjustments to curriculum rather than simply beauty touches, he added.


Former general secretary of Association of University Teachers C Pichandy seconded this. He stated the curriculum, and now not simply the syllabus, must be restructured to incorporate parts such as social outreach and gender sensitivity. He stated the current seven-point grading device was incorrect where students who get average marks constantly get the similar grade as those who get excellent marks. “This device must be statistically corrected,” he stated.
