CHENNAI: Broken seats, broken window panes and protruding nails aren't uncommon in Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses. Most passengers tend to forget about them or end up blaming themselves for not being cautious in the event that they get injured.
But one Chennaite has pulled up the MTC for not addressing those problems and filed a case with the native shopper forum after a protruding nail broken his new trousers.
On listening to his plea, the forum penalised MTC for negligence in provider.
The incident took place a couple of years ago when the petitioner, S P Chockalingam from East Tambaram, was once travelling to Guindy on an MTC bus on route 21G.
As the bus neared his destination, Chockalingam left his seat for the go out door. While disembarking from the bus, a nail protruding from a seat ripped his trousers. The man mentioned this brought about him psychological agony and a lack of Rs 2,000. Chockalingam issued a prison understand to the MTC for not maintaining the buses properly and not sporting our repair work. Poor situation of buses could injure passengers and injury their garments, he mentioned.
In response, MTC denied those allegations and mentioned the seat was once broken because a passenger had stashed his luggage inappropriately beneath it. The conductor of the bus had informed Chockalingam and asked him to take any other seat as many have been empty at that point of time. But he refused and deliberately sat on the broken seat. MTC mentioned it was once able to pay for the broken trouser but the complainant approached the forum despite that.
On listening to to both the edges, the District Consumer Redressal Forum, Chennai (South) directed MTC to pay Rs 7,000 as repayment for injury.
But Chockalingam’s isn't an isolated case. Most buses run through state-owned transport firms are in unhealthy shape and inconvenience passengers, this despite the government spending greater than Rs 300 crore a yr on upkeep. So far, the state transport division has replaced 2,300 buses.
