NEW DELHI: Former India cricket captain Bishan Singh Bedi on Wednesday steered the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to convey back the older version of the Duleep Trophy, which he felt should have zonal groups.
While the BCCI excluded the Duleep Trophy from the 2015-16 season, in the final two seasons, the groups have been named as India Blue, India Green and India Red. The groups have been composed of players from around the zones.
Delivering a memorial lecture on the first Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) annual conclave, Bedi also steered the young cricketers to turn out their skill on the two domestic competitions sooner than fascinated about the franchise-based Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 match.
Bedi stated that the cricket officials should have a re-look on the way the Ranji Trophy is played. He minced no words in criticising the current state of the Duleep Trophy.
"These two competitions are the most important to our cricket construction. It was a ladder -- you do well for state groups after which move on to constitute the zonal groups. That custom has been broken.
"Ranji Trophy wishes an excellent and difficult appearance. Duleep Trophy should not see the colours as a substitute of zones," he stated, referring to the names of the groups in the current mode. That has to be the standards for international consideration.
"I have no factor in any respect on the ones going for T20s and IPL matches. Assessment of a skill has to be at the figures of top notch cricket," he insisted.
Bedi also "revered" current Indian skipper Virat Kohli's grievance of a cramped international cricket time table.
He also had words of praise for Kohli.
"Kohli's depth during a recreation which he presentations -- I've not observed that during every other Indian. But I do not believe one of the most gestures he does at the box. But with time, he'll mellow," Bedi, who unveiled a stand named after him on the Ferozeshah Kotla, stated.
Commenting at the factor of resumption of bilateral cricket ties between India and Pakistan, Bedi stated that cricket should be kept above politics.
"Cricketers play cricket. They don't seem to be meant to stop terrorism. It is similar factor with the movies. What is the point of curtailing them on this?"
