Residents, FB groups join hands to spruce up park

DHARWAD: When the government didn't listen to their demands, the citizens of Laxmi Nagar, with a bit of help from their Facebook pals, took issues into their own fingers, reasonably literally. And thanks to their effort, the 1-acre park within the locality, overgrown with weeds and teeming with pigs and reptiles, is spruced up and in a position for guests, old and young.

Residents have been interesting to the Hubballi Dharwad Municipal Corporation for years now to increase the only park of their layout.

With no reaction forthcoming, the citizens joined fingers with a Facebook crew, Dharwad Bonds, and cleaned up the park on Sunday. Sanjeev Kulkarni, president of the Laxmi Nagar Welfare Association, mentioned the park have been abandoned over the years as it was once now not protected for citizens.

Thick trees had grown within the park, the benches were in dangerous form and a walking path was once damaged and unfit to be used. Kulkarni mentioned at the citizens' insistence, HDMC workforce did a shoddy process of cleansing the park a couple of months ago and didn't go back.


"Members from Dharwad Bonds came forward to help and stepped in to clean this park... With their help, we have today cleaned the park and painted the benches. We are now planning employ a guard to maintain cleanliness by collecting fees from residents," he mentioned.


Vijaya Kulkarni, Sarasanand Dodwad, Ottile Anaban Kumar, Y V Hireamath and other citizens pitched in, Kulkarni mentioned. Banyan, bilwa, fig, banni, peepal saplings donated by P V Hiremath, a resident, were additionally planted by the volunteers. Kiran Hiremath, admin of Dharwad Bonds, and Veeresh Kelageri, a member, mentioned the gang was once dedicated to taking over voters' reasons and helping them out.


"Laxminagar residents approached us, seeking our help to clean the park. It had turned into a breeding ground for pigs, dogs and even reptiles," mentioned Hiremath.


"It looked like a forest, overgrown with bushes and shrubs. We started the cleanup on Sunday. A JCB was pressed into service to remove bush, shrubs and weeds and to level the ground. Then, the benches and a stage in the park were painted. We have also repaired the walking path and made it safe for walkers," Hiremath added.
