50 farmers detained for resisting Gujarat company's bid to take possession of land

AHMEDABAD: About 50 farmers have been on Sunday detained by police as 1000's of cultivators protested the transfer of a Gujarat executive company to take ownership of land at a village in Bhavnagar district for a proposed lignite plant.
However, the native head of a farmers' crew alleged that the police manhandled the protesters, including girls and children, and in the process a minimum of five other people have been injured.

The Gujarat Power Corporation Limited had acquired 3,377 acres of land from just about 1,250 farmers throughout 12 villages below Ghogha taluka in Bhavnagar about two decades ago, to set up its proposed lignite plant.

However, most of these years the land remained in the ownership of farmers who have been cultivating it.

The farmers have now been opposing the corporate's bid to take ownership of the acquired land.

The company had sought police coverage for its job to take the ownership of the land when the conflict erupted, Bhavnagar Superintendent of Police Dipankar Trivedi mentioned.

"We detained around 50 people and fired about 50 teargas shells, and also baton-charged the protesters near Badi village," he mentioned.

Narendrasinh Gohil, a local farmer chief and member of Gujarat Khedut Samaj, a cultivators' body, claimed that the farmers have been sporting out a relaxed protest.

"As we carried out a peaceful protest march against the company's move to take possession of our land, a large number of policemen were deployed to prevent us. The farmers and their families, including women and children, came out in thousands to protest this (taking over possession of land)," he mentioned.

The police manhandled protesters, including girls and children, and in the process a minimum of five individuals have been injured, alleged Gohil.

At least 10 out of the 50 protesters detained by the police have been girls, he claimed.

The protesters have demanded the corporate to start up recent lawsuits to procure the contentious land as per the Land Acquisition Act-2013.

This used to be the 3rd time the farmers resisted the corporate's transfer to take ownership of the land.

The farmers from the affected villages had earlier filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court against the transfer, announcing the corporate will have to start up a recent procedure to procure the land, as per segment 24 (2) of the Land Acquisition Act-2013.

The Act states that an company will have to start up a brand new procedure to procure land if it didn't take its ownership for greater than five years after obtaining it.

The farmers' lawyer, Anand Yagnik, mentioned, "The high court has completed the hearing but not passed the order, as the Supreme Court recently asked courts not to pass an order until inconsistent judgements in the matter are settled by its constitutional bench".

"No interim relief was granted to us in the matter," he added.
