CHENNAI: At least 7,000 doctors in state-run clinical faculties can be re-designated or promoted as according to Medical Council India laws and nomenclature by month-end, director of clinical training A Edwin Joe announced here on Monday.
The Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association had told health secretary J Radhakrishnan and Dr Joe that affiliate professors would no longer pose as professors during MCI inspections for renewal of permission. For five years, affiliate doctors have been misrepresented as professors to renew ‘permission’ for proceeding MBBS classes in many faculties in spite of 50% vacancies in professor posts, they stated. More than 500 of the 1,020 professor posts are vacant.


A staff of doctors officially handed over the representation to officers and told reporters the fraud gained’t recur despite the fact that it manner state clinical faculties shedding popularity.


Dr Joe stated they had been operating on redesignating instructing college for nearly a month. “We found that even at entry level there have been many variations in designations. While some MBBS doctors have been called tutors, some have been called demonstrators,” he stated. At the senior level affiliate professors have been also called readers.


Promotions have been also time bound. After a 12 months, tutors/demonstrators have been re-designated junior residents and three years later have been made assistant professors if in non-clinical circulation or senior residents if in clinical circulation. The MCI has now stated on doctors with a PG stage can get promotions.


The process for promotions was halted five years ago when anomalies have been found in several promotions. “We have ready a revised record and despatched it to the health department for approval,” he stated.
