PIL to cap air fares: HC seeks Centre, DGCA reply

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought responses from the Centre and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation on a PIL seeking capping of airfares charged via the quite a lot of airways within the nation.

A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar sought the stand of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and DGCA at the plea via a shopper rights activist who has alleged that the authorities have been performing as "silent spectators" to the "arbitrary" solving of fares via the airways.

The activist, Bejon K Misra, in his plea, has claimed that capping of airfares was once necessary as airways steadily price more than 10 occasions the base fee when there's a scarcity of seats.

In give a boost to of his claim, he has referred to the hot incident of IndiGo airline cancelling numerous its flights after some of its A320N aircraft have been grounded due to engine trouble.


Misra has alleged that due to the cancellation of those flights, IndiGo passengers needed to guide tickets on the last minute on other airways at "exorbitant prices".


He has sought that airways must no longer be allowed to price more than a justified hike within the advance booking fare.


The petitioner has stated that capping of airfares or tips to keep watch over them are necessary to ensure "greater transparency and accountability" and "discourage profiteering and undue enrichment in the business of civil aviation".


The courtroom will hear the topic subsequent on August eight.
