Telangana water index slips into danger zone

HYDERABAD: Telangana is ranked 10th in overall composite water management index with a rating of 49.6 in 2016-17, in spite of improving its performance in water resources management when compared to earlier 12 months. According to a water index document released through NITI Aayog, Telangana is ranked amongst crimson class states with a low rating that still comprises Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Goa.



Andhra Pradesh ranked 3rd within the overall index. According to the NITI Aayog document, a high-performing state like Andhra Pradesh and medium-performing state like Telangana suffered from serious drought lately.



As in line with the document, Telangana is doing well on floor and groundwater recovery. It said Telangana restored 70 in line with cent of its irrigation possible of known bodies and 90 in line with cent of essential wells. The document mentioned Telangana may be doing well in urban water supply. According to NITI Aayog, the state index rating for the bottom 12 months 2015-16 was 45.2 and it has risen to 49.6 in 2016-17. “Action taken through these states and their subsequent just right performance at the Index, are driven through necessity within the face of looming water shortage. This correlation shows, definitely, that corrective action is starting in some areas that need it the most. (sic)” the document said.



Telangana had shown the most important development in irrigation possible through raising its ratio from 4% to 53%. However, it scored very low on watershed development-supply-side management, call for side management participatory irrigation practices, demand-side management of sustainable on-farm water use practices, police and governance associated with water management. But it scored high on augmentation at source and recovery of water bodies and floor water source augmentation, the document said.
