TN wants Centre to operationalise CWMA

COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi Ok Palaniswami on Sunday sought instant operationalisation of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC).
In his speech at the fourth annual assembly of the governing council of Niti Aayog in New Delhi, Palaniswami stated instant operationalisation of the CWMA and the CWRA used to be essential for the efficient implementation of the general order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, as changed via the Supreme Court.

He recommended the Centre to take steps for interlinking of rivers via nationalisation of all the interstate rivers.

“Interlinking of interstate rivers alone offers the promise of constructing a framework that may allow optimum utilisation of water sources among states,’’ he stated.

Pointing out that Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar districts have been known as aspirational districts, EPS recommended the central govt to sanction one medical college each for those two districts in 2018 -19 underneath the central sector scheme. The Dental Council of India and the Union health ministry will have to calm down norms and approve state-funded dental college in Virudhunagar too, he stated.

The chief minister demanded that a centre for excellence in Gandhian philosophy and rural construction be established in Gandhigram University at a cost of Rs 500 crore.
