COIMBATORE: Thanks to the effective implementation of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) act, extra people are having secure and hygienic food in the district.
The selection of food industry operators registered or authorized through the food protection division has larger nearly three-fold. According to the officers of the dept, but even so restaurants, bakeries and snacks manufacturers, they have also brought many home bakers and home-based catering products and services below the food protection ambit.

The selection of food businesses registered below the FSSAI act in the district has gone up from not up to 6,000 shops in remaining October to 17,000 as of this week, designated food protection officer Vijayalalithambigai said. “There are about 29,000 food industry operators, which means we have managed to achieve no less than 60% compliance. The compliance is higher amongst licensees or industry operators with a turnover of greater than Rs 12 lakh. Smaller businesses have to catch up,” she instructed TOI.


Food protection officers had been instructing house owners of latest stores and eateries about laws referring to use of oil, water, packaging and serving material when they practice for registration. “We inform them to not use newspapers or published papers to serve food and likewise in opposition to reusing cooking oil and artificial colours. We train them about tactics to store uncooked fabrics. We have also instructed them now not to buy affordable tea and occasional powder and even milk, as a result of that may be adulterated. As a end result, the quality of food they offer has gone up,” a food protection officer said.


In the remaining three days, the dept had issued notices to 19 food industry operators and 9 small stores, asking them to obtain licenses below FSSAI.


The officers said that whilst compliance within the company limits is high, extra units in rural areas want to be brought below its ambit. “In places like Valparai, the compliance is rarely 50%, because of the terrain and the fact that many estates and homes run homestays there be offering food,” Vijayalalithambigai added.
