Man arrested for smuggling gold from Sharjah

COIMBATORE: A 24-year-old MBA graduate from Kerala has been arrested at the town airport for smuggling gold value Rs 1.15 crore into the country from Sharjah.
M Amalraj, of Ernakulam in Kerala, used to be lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison below judicial custody on Tuesday.

According to an legitimate source, officers hooked up to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had stuck Amalraj four days ago when he flew down to the city from Sharjah by means of Air Arabia airways.


He used to be found carrying a single piece of steel curler, which he stated used to be moulded and weighed about 13.6kg. The passenger advised officers that it used to be part of a steel rolling mill and he had brought it to get it polished and some different process paintings done. Taking him for a possible provider, DRI officers, however, detained him and seized the steel curler from him.


After an in depth examination at a lathe workshop, officers retrieved 24 gold bars that have been concealed within the steel curler. DRI officers then registered a case towards Amalraj below Section 135 of Customs Act and produced him prior to the manager judicial Justice of the Peace court right here on Tuesday. The court remanded him in judicial custody. Later, Amalraj used to be lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison.


The source stated Amalraj used to be employed with a non-public firm in Ernakulam. “He used to be approached by means of some smugglers a few weeks ago and introduced a hefty pay. We have launched a manhunt for the mastermind,” the source stated.
