Gold worth Rs 110cr seized at Delhi's IGI in '18

NEW DELHI: Gold price over Rs 110 crore was seized from smugglers by way of customs officers at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International airport right through the ultimate 12 months, in step with an official remark issued on Wednesday.

A complete of 340 instances of gold smuggling, an increase of 58% as in comparison to the instances filed in 2017, had been registered by way of the customs in 2018, it mentioned.

In those, 402.48 kg of gold, valuing Rs 113.83 crore, had been seized and 262 persons had been arrested, the remark issued by way of the customs mentioned.

There had been 57 instances of smuggling of foreign currency echange right through the 12 months, in which foreign exchange price Rs 22.27 crore had been seized. A complete of 38 persons had been arrested in those instances, it mentioned.

In 2017, there have been 215 instances of gold smuggling on the Delhi airport. The customs officers seized 242.5kg of the yellow steel in those instances and arrested 143 other people.

In 35 instances of foreign exchange smuggling right through 2017, a total of 18 persons had been arrested and foreign currency echange price Rs 10.75 crore had been seized.

"A comparative analysis reveals that there was a 58% increase in the number of gold smuggling cases booked which resulted in a 65.90 per cent increase in the quantity of smuggled gold seized," the Delhi customs mentioned.


Similarly, a 62.85 in keeping with cent increase in the collection of foreign currency instances booked led to a 107.05 in keeping with cent increase in the price of foreign currency seized, it mentioned.


"The increase in gold smuggling cases show that people still consider it as a safe investment option. There is a strong need to deter people's love for gold," a senior customs official mentioned.


There was additionally seizure of narcotics on the Delhi airport in the ultimate 12 months.


"Whereas there were no cocaine seizures during 2017, three foreign nationals were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, during 2018. These cases involved the seizure of 2.35kg of cocaine worth approximately Rs 13.50 crore in the international narcotics market," the customs division mentioned.
