CHENNAI: At least 8 people died in 18 main highway accidents during New Year celebrations in Chennai between Monday midday and 6am on Tuesday. About 105 people sustained minor injuries in about 130 highway accidents reported around the town.

While two people dedicated suicide at their properties in separate New Year-related incidents on Tuesday within the town, 3 people died in highway accidents in Coimbatore district.


Reckless riding through teenagers, overspeeding, helmetless driving, and highway rule violations kept the emergency keep an eye on room officials, who gained 800 calls for ambulance carrier, busy throughout Monday and Tuesday.


At least 263 men have been booked for under the influence of alcohol riding, and 33 for overspeeding.


While the Government Rajiv Gandhi Hospital gained 44 trauma circumstances together with 34 highway twist of fate circumstances, the Royapettah Hospital gained 140 patients of which 106 have been associated with highway accidents. About 2,000 visitors police staff have been stationed around the town to check drunken riding, and 1,022 LED reflectors have been placed at vantage issues to keep an eye on dashing. Around 162 vehicle check issues and 97 ambulances have been stationed within the town to attend to emergency circumstances.
