Pune varsity replaces gown with traditional wear

PUNE: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has made up our minds to exchange the quintessential colonial convocation clothes consisting of black robes and square caps with Indian traditional put on.
The exchange will come into effect on January 11, the convocation day of the university.

The dress code for each male and female students could be kurta, pyjama and uparna teamed with Puneri pagdi.

When minister of state for human useful resource and construction Satyapal Singh used to be at Bharati Vidyapeeth (deemed to be university) here in June ultimate yr, he had stated that there used to be the will for a change and urged that robes and hats be achieved away with as convocation dress.

SPPU pro-vice-chancellor N S Umrani stated that following the minister’s recommendation, the varsity had been bearing in mind bringing about changes in its convocation dress code. "After discussion it was decided to change the dress code for the convocation scheduled this month."

Academics have welcomed the sartorial makeover. Former SPPU vice-chancellor Vasudev Gade stated, “I believe the theory of traditional clothes for convocation is a welcome exchange.”

Until not too long ago, donning overflowing robes, hats and scarves used to be de rigueur for visitors and department heads at convocation. Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) vice-chancellor Rajas Parchure stated the university’s choice to offer the commencement ceremony a conventional makeover used to be “good” because the visitors on the podium all the time felt uncomfortable in robes.

Students stated that regardless that they in some way controlled the robes, they looked ‘funny and strange’ on visitors. “The caps didn't all the time are compatible the scale of the visitors, so everything used to be more of a complicated dress tournament than convocation. Dressing up traditional is a brilliant thought,” SPPU alumnus Rajeshwari Phadtare stated.

Another SPPU alumnus, Rajeshwari Phadtare, stated the exchange would upload color to the ceremony.

The thought of donning traditional put on all the way through convocation had been gaining floor for a while. In July 2015, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had asked universities to imagine the use of handloom fabric for ceremonial attire for special events, comparable to convocations. Following this, many institutions of higher schooling, including IITs of Kanpur and Bombay, offered traditional clothes for convocation ceremonies.

In April ultimate yr, the UGC mooted the theory of one-country-one-attire for convocation and issued an commercial calling for professional designers and scholars to pitch in and ship their designs for commencement ceremony which might depict the Indian culture and tradition. An expert committee used to be shaped to judge and make a choice the designs.

However, some institutions like GIPE had never adopted the tradition of members donning robes at commencement ceremonies. “We simply ask students to dress of their maximum relaxed clothes. Later, after students demanded some outfit, we offered a not unusual sash,” stated Parchure.

In 2010, then environment minister Jairam Ramesh had removed his robe at the convocation of the Indian Institute of Forest Management in Bhopal describing it as a “barbarian colonial relic”.
