Rare owl spotted near Timbi Lake

Vadodara: It is among the most shy birds and has no longer been spotted around Vadodara in over three a long time. But, a lot to the birdwatchers’ pleasure, a gaggle of short- eared owl has been spotted in backwaters of Timbi Lake in Waghodia, 12 km from the town. Neelkumar Solanki, an avid birdwatcher, first spotted the owl in December final 12 months.

“I stay visiting water our bodies across the city to click birds. In December, I saw the short-eared owl within the grasslands of Timbi Lake. It used to be a pleasing surprise as this owl hasn’t been spotted in complete central Gujarat for many years,” Solanki told TOI. He saved tracking the owl and documented its actions.


“Rahul Bhatt with the help of every other birdwatcher, Kartik Upadhyay clicked the short-eared owl’s pictures. It is a very shy chook that is by no means seen near human habitat. These owls may have arrived in Timbi because of scarcity of meals they usually discovered this spot best,” Solanki mentioned. Timbi Lake’s grassland has plentiful numbers of rodents and snakes that is staple vitamin of short-eared owl.


Solanki mentioned that these owls transfer around in groups and they are seen in Kutch, Rajkot and in some parts of southern Gujarat. “These owls arrive here in November and fly out in February,” Solanki mentioned.


The short-eared owl is seen in all continents excluding Antarctica and Australia. This chook breeds in Europe, Asia, North and South America, the Caribbean, Hawaii and the Galápagos Islands. It is in part migratory because it strikes from the northern parts of its vary strikes to south in winters.
