Increase in cyber offences worries Odisha cops

BHUBANESWAR: Cybercrime larger via nearly five consistent with cent throughout Odisha in 2018 as compared to the previous year. According to the Crime Branch’s statistics, total 867 cybercrime instances were registered in 2018 as towards 824 in 2017.

Sources said bulk of the instances incorporated on-line banking frauds and circulation of vulgar footage of women on social media. Crime Branch officials said the occurrence of cyber offences was alarming in 2017. The crime had shot via a worrying 159 consistent with cent in the state in 2017 with registration of 824 instances as towards 317 instances in 2016, resources said.

"Our sustained efforts on public sensitization programmes and awareness campaigns paid off to a great extent, even though cyber crime continues to be a challenging area for us. Internet explosion, unchecked use of social media and lack of proper mechanism to prevent the offence are some of the plausible causes of the occurrence of cyber offences," additional director general of police (Crime Branch) Santosh Upadhyay said.

The state police were on their feet following circulation of nude and obscene clips of women on WhatsApp and Facebook remaining year. Wary of circulation of obscene footage of women on social media, DGP R P Sharma previous issued an ordinary running process (SOP) to district SPs, highlighting the methods of investigation and related sections of legislation to care for the culprits. Crime Branch also issued an advisory for the general public, highlighting the penal provisions for committing such offence.

In the SOP, the DGP requested the SPs to create particular groups to keep tabs on mischief-mongers, who circulate the objectionable movies and footage on virtual platforms. Cops have also been requested to toughen their intelligence mechanism to prevent the cyber crime towards ladies. Sharma said the Odisha police will arrange a social media monitoring laboratory to keep tabs on folks, who unfold faux, hate and objectionable messages, footage and movies on different on-line platforms.

Experts expressed fear that once vulgar video or photograph is uploaded on the internet, there is little scope of disposing of the ones from the virtual platforms. "Even though the police succeed in removing the objectionable photos or videos by contacting the concerned online service providers, the lingering process would already cause the damage to victims. It is also difficult to prevent such crimes as nobody can presume or expect someone to circulate objectionable photos or hate messages on social media," said Sourav Biswal, an IT knowledgeable.
