Hubballi's sole art gallery cries out for attention

HUBBALLI: Whilst local artists are paying massive sums to display their art work in personal resorts and artwork galleries in lots of locations of the state, a government artwork gallery located at Indira Glass House right here has been crying for consideration due to the alleged apathy of the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC).
The three-decade-old artwork gallery is the fruit of the efforts of legendary artist M V Minajagi, who got the artwork gallery established in 1981.

Former chief minister past due Dharam Singh had inaugurated the gallery when he used to be the urban development minister. Later, the gallery used to be named after Minajagi. The gallery has now not been maintained since 1996 and has remained closed since then due to paucity of body of workers and alleged negligence of HDMC that didn't allot price range for its upkeep.

Many artists are disadvantaged of an opportunity to display their artworks at a lesser value due to this gallery being closed. As there is no executive artwork gallery in Hubballi, the artists are showing their art work on the executive artwork gallery in Dharwad.

Senior artist Shankar Kundgold instructed TOI, "When artists ask HDMC to rent out the gallery to display their paintings, they get a negligent reply. HDMC blames the lack of staff for not maintaining the gallery."


Artists say the gallery used to be built by Nirmithi Kendra of the district management and used to be passed over to town company.


They have demanded that the gallery be reopened and service works taken up besides deputing everlasting body of workers for its upkeep.


In-charge assistant commissioner HDMC, S R Majumdar, stated the gallery has been closed due to loss of body of workers. "However, the gallery will be developed under the Smart city project," he stated.
